Vic: Black country fireman's best hope
Victorian firefighters will continue to take advantage of cooler weather today as theytry to surround the state's massive blaze with blackened country.
Work has begun on backburning operations from the Yalmy Road containment line in fareast Gippsland, to protect the Bendoc, Delegate River, Bonang, Goongerah, Deddick Valleyand Dellicknora areas.
A spokesman says they're working towards the containment of the massive Bogong Complexfire which still burns in the Gippsland region and into New South Wales.
The fires have razed more than 40 homes and blackened more than one million hectaresof park and forest since being sparked by lightning 40 days ago.
The massive blaze, which has a 650 kilometres of uncontained front along its southernedge, continues to cause problems for firefighters, flaring near Mt Sarah south-west ofMt Buffalo and on the eastern edge of the Snowy River National Park.
Crews are within eight kilometres of linking the western boundary of the fire betweenthe Hogtown sector and the Crooked river sector, 20 kms north west of Dargo, he said.
