Qld: Minister accused of double standards over Volkers matter

A Queensland cabinet minister has been accused of favouring swimming coach SCOTT VOLKERSover his alleged female victims.

Industrial Relations Minister GORDON NUTTALL yesterday revealed he telephoned the nationalwomen's swimming coach a day after Mr VOLKERS was charged last year with indecent dealing.

Opposition police spokesman VAUGHAN JOHNSON today asked in parliament why Mr NUTTALLdidn't also telephone the family of one alleged victim, who also lived in his electorate.

Mr NUTTALL, who's held the north Brisbane seat of Sandgate for 11 years, says he didn'tcontact the person because he didn't know them.

He says he didn't mention the call to Premier PETER BEATTIE, Police Minister TONY MCGRADYor Attorney-General ROD WELFORD as that would have been inappropriate.

The Queensland Crime and Misconduct Commission says it will investigate fresh claimsof political interference over the Director of Public Prosecution's dropping of chargesagainst Mr VOLKERS.
